John Edwards, Cardiff
A Hôtel des Arts (00 33-1 46 06 30 52, www.arts-hotel-paris.com), in Montmartre, is perfect for the financially challenged suitor. Its rooms are quite generous for a two- star property, unpretentiously furnished, and some have wonderful views over the higgle-piggle of rooftops. One nice touch is that all the paintings are by Montmartre artists, which adds a certain je ne sais quoi. And it’s precisely on budget at £60 a night (the views cost an extra £6 — oh, go on, surely she’s worth it). Ten minutes away, near the Place de Clichy, Hôtel Eldorado (01 45 22 35 21, www.eldoradohotel.fr) is very bohemian. The rooms have quirky leopard prints and zebra stripes and knick-knacks from Africa and Asia. It’s well within your price range, with its best rooms costing about £50.
